The first of the Black Diamonds was worked on hot pink cotton. I wanted to try smocking with beads, and I think I used black because that’s what I happened to have in the house that day. But I loved the combination of the back against the rich colors of jewel-tone fabrics and it turned out to be a popular design.
This was a design created by request. This was back before the Etsy had the functionality for custom orders, and, although it was labeled Reserved, it was purchased by someone other than the intended customer. So I made another, even though the fabric was hard to work with and the machine embroidery accents were more difficult to make even and nice than they look. I think I ended up even making a third one of these before I finally learned how to just say no. Then I stamped it Retired and moved on.
Still, I really loved the pink and white, so I made Pink Diamonds. It’s my favorite of the beaded dresses, and also became Britain’s favorite when she arrived.
